Lego 71011 Collectible Minifigures Series 15 Review - Part 1

The collectible minifigures series 15 is available in the UK now and as I have collected every figure from every series (except for Mr. Gold in series 10) there is no way I'm not going to collect this series. There are lots of great figures in this set and lots of new elements. When a set first comes out I usually buy about 5 or so figures without feeling the bags just for a bit of fun. After that I usually feel the bags to find the figures I want and to avoid doubles. This time I got 6 as one of my local stores has a promotion if you buy 5 of these you get an extra one free. Unfortunately I got two doubles so I'm just going to review the unique figures I got.

The Winged Battle Warrior is a very cool figure. He reminds me of Brian Blessed from the Flash Gordon movie or a character from the anime Saint Seiya. He clearly loves gold so much that his entire ensemble is golden. The torso and leg pieces are made gold coloured plastic with a metallic gold print on top for the details. There is detailed printing on the side of his legs but nothing on his back. He has a gold spear, gold helmet and gold chest piece. The golden wings are attached using two golden clip pieces. His head, arms and hands are the standard yellow colour. He looks really cool and has really nice detailed printing. This is one of the figures in the set that army builders might go nuts for.

The Kendo Master is nice figure but quite simplistic compared to the Winged Warrior. The arms, torso, legs and helmet are all made in the same dark blue colour. He has black hands and the standard yellow head. A really nice feature are the wooden swords made of tan plastic. The only printing he has is on the front of his torso and barely visible printing on the front of his legs. It's quite disappoint that he has no back printing. The face print is nice, behind the mask he has a mustache, beard and a dark blue bandanna. The colours on the kendo helmet are slightly off center though. Another downside I found with the helmet is that it doesn't stay on very well, a slight knock and it pops right off. Of the four figures I have from this set so far this is my least favorite due to the lack of printing and the helmet troubles. This seems like one of the laziest figures in the set as there has been plenty of kendo related figures released in the Ninjago theme.

I quite like Jewel Thief minifigure and it's obvious the inspiration for this figure is Catwoman. It kind of feels like they're saying sorry for not releasing a Dark Knight Rises Catwoman figure and here is the closest you're going to get. This figure uses the new hair mold introduced for Black Widow in the recent avengers sets however this is the first time it has appeared in black. The front legs and torso are nicely designed prints of a cat burglar suit. However like the Kendo Master there is no back printing which seems a little lazy. The face is nicely printed with a black mask and beauty spot included. The accessories are exactly what you would expect of a jewel thief being a grapling hook and a diamond.

An Astronaut sounds like a really bland choice and I wasn't too excited about this figure but it is actually really nicely done. I really like this figure now and welcome it as a great addition to a wide variety of space exploration minifigures. Instead of the more recent space helmets they have opted to use the more traditional white biker helmet with golden visor and I have to say it really creates a nice effect. The best thing about this figure however is the very detailed printing. Not only are the front torso and leg prints very nice he also has side leg, arm printing and a really cool bearded face print. Along with the helmet he has a oxygen tank and a flag with the classic space logo.

Not the most exciting start to the collection but I do like these four figures and I look forward to collecting the rest. My favorites this time are the Winged Battle Warrior and the Astronaut. I think I'm most looking forward to getting the Tribal Woman with the baby and The Shark Suit Guy.

Lego Set 5004077: Target Minifigure Gift Set 2015 Review

Close to Christmas in 2015, Target stores in the USA released a minfigure gift set. The gift set cube contained 4 minifigures which included an exclusive DC Super Heroes Lightning Lad minifigure. The other three minifigures were from the popular Lego themes City, Ninjago and Chima. I managed to get hold of a set of these minifigures from a seller on bricklink for a reasonable price. I also saved on shipping by asking for the figures to be removed from the cube before posting.

The main reason I wanted this set was for the exclusive Ligtning Lad figure. The design of this figure comes from the upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release Lego: Justice League - Cosmic Clash which includes an exclusive Cosmic Boy minfigure. Amazon UK has the DVD/Blu-Ray listed here but there is no release date for it yet. Looking at the trailer you can see Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl together as the super hero team The Legion of Super Heroes. So Anyone who wants to collect the entire Legion will have to get Lightning Lad from this Gift set, Cosmic Boy from the Blu Ray and then hope that Lego releases a Saturn Girl figure somewhere. I personally doubt they will officially release Saturn Girl and the only way to get her will be to find a decent version in the customs market.

I'm unfamiliar with the Lightning Lad character in the comics but I do vaguely remember him from the Legion of Super Heroes Animated series from a few years back. Despite that I really like the minifigure and doing a quick google search I believe it is a well designed representation of the character. His Costume is nicely printed on both the torso and the legs. He comes with dual face print, one standard expression and one super powered lightning face. One of the best features of the figure has to be the Legion of super heroes Logo printed on his arm which I feel is a great little detail.

The Ninjago minifigure with this set is Stone Armour Kai (I have also seen this as Techno Robes Armored Kai). I'm not fully clued up on Ninjago but I am inclined to believe this version of Kai is also exclusive to this set. The figure is nicely designed and includes shoulder guards, a face bandanna and a sword. The Hair piece is a standard hair style for Kai and it's made of a soft rubbery material. Kai only has the front face print which I felt was a little strange as they could have easily provided a second face for this figure.

I had to look this up but I believe the Chima character is Sir Fangar who is the leader of the Sabre-Tooth Tiger Tribe. Brickipedia displays this as the cured version leading me to believe this is also an exclusive figure. The other version of this figure have a Trans-Blue right leg and left arm whereas this figure has two white arms and two white legs. He has a dark blue cape that kind of got squashed in the packaging but I'm sure I could flatten it out if I really wanted to. All other variations of this character seem to have a white cape rather than the dark blue cape you get with this version. The design is really nice with sound metallic armor pieces printed on his torso and legs. The head piece is looks good but I feel like the eyes don't line up quite right with the head print underneath. With the head piece removed the head print looks a little silly as do pretty much all of the Chima characters. He only has one face print underneath which is fine as you can't really see it anyway.

Lastly the Lego City Scuba Diver which I have also heard is an exclusive to this set but I'm not 100% sure if that's true. He has a face print with a goatee which I have not seen before and his arms a dual molded with two different colour plastics to give him a short sleeved look. His hat and scuba mask are pretty standard for city scuba divers he does not come with any flippers however. The body printing is quite detailed and especially like the log on the back of his costume.

In conclusion I highly recommend this set for Lightning lad alone but as all the other figures appear to be exclusive variations then try to get the whole cube if you can. The base plates you get with the figures are the same style as the ones with the collectible minifigure series except they come in a blueish grey colour which I have not seen available anywhere else. So if you're a collector like me and love exclusives then this is definitely a set you should track down.

Lego Ideas Pick: The Secret of Monkey Island

Time for another Lego Ideas Pick and This time it's The Secret of Monkey Island by Vitreolum.
I had a flick through the Lego Ideas pages and this one really jumped out at me as being both an original concept and very well designed. You Can find the project here.

I'm a huge Monkey Island fan ever since playing a demo of The Curse of Monkey Island back when you got PC game demo's on discs attached to the front of magazines. I got the game and played through it several times and decided to track down the originals. I remember finding them in a box set White Label (a bit like a classics range for PC) edition in HMV and had to have it. I played through them both and loved them as much as Curse of Monkey Island. For anyone who has not played them I can not recommend them enough. You can get the special editions of the first to games On Steam or GOG and they show up in the sales every now and again so keep an eye out for them.

This Ideas project focuses on the first game in the series and the build is of the iconic stone monkey head of Monkey Island. The model is really nicely designed with lots of detail and clever use of certain Lego elements. Also represented in minifigure form is main character of the series, Guybrush Threepwood. The set could be improved slightly by adding some items the player would find in that particular section of the game such as the giant q-tip or even a mechanism to open the monkey's mouth. I think this would be a great little set that could even fit in well with the existing Pirate themes. At the time of writing this project has 1638 supporters and only 203 days left so let's try and push that up to the 10,000 supporter requirement.

Lego Set 75902: Scooby Doo The Mystery Machine Review

The first thing I noticed when opening this set was the sticker sheet. The build-able parts of this set are fairly small being a single van and a tree monster so the amount of stickers you get with was pretty surprising. The majority of the exterior of the Mystery Machine is composed of stickers. It's always a little disappointing to get stickers rather than printed pieces especially if you're not the best at applying them centered and straight.

Despite the stickers I think the finished product looks great. The build was quite enjoyable and I particularly liked the little details for the interior of the van. There are detailed features for the interior of the van like a cooker, sink, computers and a large sandwich. The back of the Van is hinged so you can easily access the interior which is a good little play feature. There are a few clips in the back to hold accessories such as a camera and a torch (very useful items in a mystery solvers arsenal). The windshield of the van is a brand new unique piece for this set. It's a great new piece which really helps create the look of the mystery machine. The hub caps and the dish on the front are printed pieces which is great to see amongst all the stickers in this set.

The small build of the set is the spooky tree which is also covered in stickers. In fact the main part of the tree (the scary face) is a just a large sticker on a brown half cylinder piece. The back of the tree reveals that the scary tree is actually a robot possibly controlled by the Zombie we get with the set. The arms and the leaves have a little bit of articulation which I think adds to the mechanical effect of tree. The tree is quite a nice little addition to the set even though it is a very simple build.

Now onto the minifigures. You get four-ish minifigures Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Zombie/Zeke. I say four-ish as I'm not sure Scooby counts as an actual minifigure. I really like the minifigures included with this set and I like that the heads are regular minifigure style heads instead of the customised heads you get with the Simpsons minifigures. It makes me wonder why Lego decided to go that direction with the Simpsons minifigures but they were happy enough to use the standard heads for Scooby Doo. Even the Lego episode of the Simpsons used the standard heads and they looked quite good and did a good job of representing the character in Lego form.

Let's start with the least exciting figure of the set, Zombie/Zeke. Zeke is a completely different looking zombie to any other zombie we've had in any other set/theme. I'm quite happy that they've gave him a special design rather than reusing one of the zombies from monster fighters or the collectible minifigure series. With a little bit of research I found that Zombie is based on a character from the first season of the 1969 series "Scooby Doo where are you!" in the episode "Which Witch is Which?". You can find information about the character here. I really like the bright green colour they have used for the head and hands. I love the little detail of the buttons on the back of the head to make it look like a mask. It is a shame we did't get an extra head as an unmasked version of Zeke but I suppose it would be easy enough to use a head from a different minifigure if you really wanted to.

Fred is one of the main reasons to buy this set as this is the only set he actually appears in. So if you want the complete mystery incorporated team, you will have to buy this set. Luckily if you are only after these sets for the minifigures there are only two sets you need to buy, which is the Mystery Machine and (the only set to contain Velma) set 75904 Mystery Mansion. Fred has a brand new piece for his hair which suits the character well. I could imagine using one of the existing hair pieces would not have captured the character as well as the new piece does. His body print includes his signature ascot and the legs come in the bright pastel blue colour you find in many of the Lego friends sets. The head comes with two face prints, one standard and one scared face. Overall I really like the minifigure and I think it captures the character really well.

Shaggy is available in every set in this theme but he is pretty much the co-star of the show so that is to be expected. I think some of the available sets have slight variations of the Shaggy minifigure bust most are the same as this one with his standard green t-shirt and dark brown trousers. Just like Fred, Shaggy comes with a brand new piece for his hair which has been specifically made for the character. His torso has very basic but effective printing and the arms have two colours of plastic to create a short sleeved effect. The legs have no printing and come in a dark brown colour. He also has two face prints on his head with a standard face and a scared face. Both face prints feature his wispy facial hair to make the character really recognisable in Lego form. I really like the Shaggy minifigure but there's something about it that doesn't quite look like the character to me, It's possibly the shape as he is usually a tall skinny character which would be impossible to pull off with a standard minifigure.

Finally the title character, Scooby Doo himself. The figure looks great and captures the look of the character well. The body and scale is styled to be very similar to other Lego dogs. The head however looks very much how Scooby appears in the cartoon. Scooby has one point of articulation which is the neck. Scooby appears in all of the sets in this theme with a few variations available. The figure you get with this set looks to be in a walking or sneaking pose. The head has a chattering teeth effect printed on one side. I like this figure of Scooby but I do think the limited articulation is kind of a drawback. I remember the character building version of Scooby having much more articulation and still maintaining a stylised look. I might try to do a comparison of the Scooby Lego figure (maybe even the rest of mystery inc.) with the character building counterpart.
