Lego Set 5004077: Target Minifigure Gift Set 2015 Review

Close to Christmas in 2015, Target stores in the USA released a minfigure gift set. The gift set cube contained 4 minifigures which included an exclusive DC Super Heroes Lightning Lad minifigure. The other three minifigures were from the popular Lego themes City, Ninjago and Chima. I managed to get hold of a set of these minifigures from a seller on bricklink for a reasonable price. I also saved on shipping by asking for the figures to be removed from the cube before posting.

The main reason I wanted this set was for the exclusive Ligtning Lad figure. The design of this figure comes from the upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release Lego: Justice League - Cosmic Clash which includes an exclusive Cosmic Boy minfigure. Amazon UK has the DVD/Blu-Ray listed here but there is no release date for it yet. Looking at the trailer you can see Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl together as the super hero team The Legion of Super Heroes. So Anyone who wants to collect the entire Legion will have to get Lightning Lad from this Gift set, Cosmic Boy from the Blu Ray and then hope that Lego releases a Saturn Girl figure somewhere. I personally doubt they will officially release Saturn Girl and the only way to get her will be to find a decent version in the customs market.

I'm unfamiliar with the Lightning Lad character in the comics but I do vaguely remember him from the Legion of Super Heroes Animated series from a few years back. Despite that I really like the minifigure and doing a quick google search I believe it is a well designed representation of the character. His Costume is nicely printed on both the torso and the legs. He comes with dual face print, one standard expression and one super powered lightning face. One of the best features of the figure has to be the Legion of super heroes Logo printed on his arm which I feel is a great little detail.

The Ninjago minifigure with this set is Stone Armour Kai (I have also seen this as Techno Robes Armored Kai). I'm not fully clued up on Ninjago but I am inclined to believe this version of Kai is also exclusive to this set. The figure is nicely designed and includes shoulder guards, a face bandanna and a sword. The Hair piece is a standard hair style for Kai and it's made of a soft rubbery material. Kai only has the front face print which I felt was a little strange as they could have easily provided a second face for this figure.

I had to look this up but I believe the Chima character is Sir Fangar who is the leader of the Sabre-Tooth Tiger Tribe. Brickipedia displays this as the cured version leading me to believe this is also an exclusive figure. The other version of this figure have a Trans-Blue right leg and left arm whereas this figure has two white arms and two white legs. He has a dark blue cape that kind of got squashed in the packaging but I'm sure I could flatten it out if I really wanted to. All other variations of this character seem to have a white cape rather than the dark blue cape you get with this version. The design is really nice with sound metallic armor pieces printed on his torso and legs. The head piece is looks good but I feel like the eyes don't line up quite right with the head print underneath. With the head piece removed the head print looks a little silly as do pretty much all of the Chima characters. He only has one face print underneath which is fine as you can't really see it anyway.

Lastly the Lego City Scuba Diver which I have also heard is an exclusive to this set but I'm not 100% sure if that's true. He has a face print with a goatee which I have not seen before and his arms a dual molded with two different colour plastics to give him a short sleeved look. His hat and scuba mask are pretty standard for city scuba divers he does not come with any flippers however. The body printing is quite detailed and especially like the log on the back of his costume.

In conclusion I highly recommend this set for Lightning lad alone but as all the other figures appear to be exclusive variations then try to get the whole cube if you can. The base plates you get with the figures are the same style as the ones with the collectible minifigure series except they come in a blueish grey colour which I have not seen available anywhere else. So if you're a collector like me and love exclusives then this is definitely a set you should track down.
