Lego set 76001: The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase Review

So here's my review of Lego set 76001: The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase.

Let's start with the minifigures. Firstly The Dark Knight himself, Batman. I quite like the printing on this one, they've done a nice job with the torso and it has nice back printing. I think it's a shame they didn't do anything different with the face though. We get the standard Batman reversible head with scowly and smirky faces. The cape and cowl are pretty standard with the more recent Batman minifigs.

Next is the Commissioner Gordon minifig. I think this one is quite cool, I think the likeness of Gary Oldman is captured quite will with this one. The swat team torso is a nice addition also. His gun accessory is a little strange, it kind of looks like the guns you get with some of the space sets but I'm guessing they're trying to avoid making a mold for an automatic pistol. It doesn't bother me all that much though and for anybody that it does bother could easily enough obtain a more appropriate Lego compatible handgun. He also comes with a reversible head, one with a regular expression and the other with a slightly worried look on his face.

Now for the final minifigure in this set, Bane. Just look at that Bane minifigure. I really like this one and It is probably one of the main reasons I got this set. He has nice front and back torso printing and the head is also printed on front and back. I think his head would have benefited from some side printing here which is my only complaint really. He has one black hand and one flesh tone hand. However there is no printing on his legs. I think his jacket would have been a nice addition also. Though anybody who wants to add a jacket too him I have seen some good custom jackets for him on eBay.

Onto the actual building parts of this set. I'll talk a little about The Bat first. The first thing I did when I built it was put the batman minifig into it and exclaimed in the gruffest voice I could muster "This isn't a car". I quite like this vehicle (in the film and in Lego form) the build was quite fun and some interesting techniques were utilized in the construction process. I like the use of the Bionicle style joint parts for the (I'm not 100% sure what they are) Engine parts. The finished build looks really cool with a very minimal use of stickers. It's quite sturdy and has some missile launching action functions.

Here is Bane's Camouflage Tumbler. When I saw the first pictures of the Tumble Bat-mobile in Batman Begins, I didn't really like it. I thought it looked flimsy and nothing how a Bat-mobile should look. Then I saw the movie and realized that I was completely wrong and the tumbler is in fact absolutely awesome. Anyway, onto the actual Lego version for Bane's Tumbler. The build was alright for this one, there's some flip out guns that fire missiles as a little action feature and the lid flips up to fit bane in quite nicely. I think the tumbler looks a little dumpier than its movie counterpart but I think they've done quite well with the scale that they were going for.

As you can see from the comparison pictures the likeness isn't that bad. However the main thing I do not like about this set is the stickers that come with it. I have no idea why they though the Bane Tumbler required little bane masks all over it. I could understand some camouflage style stickers to emphasize the effect but the Bane masks are just a little weird. Maybe they thought it would help children identify the vehicle as Bane's car. There's also some side stickers for what look like large guns for the side of the tumbler. Obviously if you really don't like the stickers you can just leave them off. But don't put the stickers on and then take them off. Why you ask? It would be very painful...   for you.

You also get these little roadblock signs to build which are a nice little addition to the set.

Overall I really like the set. I think the minifigures are really cool especially the Bane minifig. I really like The Bat which I consider the better of the two vehicles in the set. I think the tumbler is alright but think they could have done a better job with the stickers for it. The price of this set is around £40 which I feel is a decent price point for this set.
